Frei to miss 8-10 weeks with broken leg

TORONTO (AP) – Toronto FC goalkeeper Stefan Frei is expected to be out for eight to 10 weeks after breaking his left leg in a training accident.

Frei was hurt Friday morning during a wet training game at BMO Field.

Frei, who has been battling Milos Kocic for the starting job, appeared to catch his leg in the grass while going after a ball.

The team says Frei suffered a broken fibula and will undergo an MRI next week to determine whether surgery is needed.

The injury came six days after captain Torsten Frings strained his hamstring during a season-opening loss in Seattle.

Kocic is expected to start Saturday’s game against the visiting San Jose Earthquakes.

Facebook: You have the right not to give employers your passwords

Senator Blumenthal is writing a bill to ban this breach of privacy

In recent months, an increasing number of companies and organizations have been?asking prospective employees not only for their Facebook usernames, but also for their passwords. What started as a seemingly isolated?incident in North Carolina last year turned out to be a lot more common than we thought. Today, Facebook addressed the situation for the first time, and the company has this to say: You have the right not to give employers your passwords if and when they ask.

In an?update on the website, company Chief Privacy Officer Erin Egan talked about how alarming the practice is, and how it compromises the?privacy of everyone on your friend list, along with your own. According to Egan: “It is important that everyone on Facebook understands they have a right to keep their password to themselves.” In fact, if you take a look at?Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, it’s a violation to share your password with anyone else.

Meanwhile, Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT)?is currently writing a bill to prohibit any employer from ever practicing the unspeakable policy. The Senator told the website?Politico that he is deeply troubled by this tactic, and that his bill would be ready very soon.

French standoff ends with suspect shot in the head

TOULOUSE, France (AP) ? In a dramatic end to a 32-hour standoff, a masked French SWAT team slipped into an Islamic extremist’s apartment Thursday, sparking a firefight that ended with the man being shot in the head as he jumped out the window, weapon in hand.

The suspect, 23-year-old Mohamed Merah, was wanted in the deaths of three French paratroopers, three Jewish schoolchildren and a rabbi ? all killed since March 11 in what Merah reportedly told police was an attempt to “bring France to its knees.”

Police had been trying to capture the suspect alive since a predawn raid on his apartment Wednesday in the southwestern city of Toulouse. The killings he was accused of ? and boasted about to police ? have shocked France, ignited fear in moderate Muslims about stoking discrimination and may even affect the country’s upcoming presidential election.

The seven slayings, carried out in three motorcycle shooting attacks, are believed to be the first killings inspired by Islamic radical motives in France since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, speaking in Paris, said an investigation was under way to see if Merah, a French citizen of Algerian descent who claimed links to al-Qaida, had any accomplices. His mother and a brother were detained a day ago by police after the mother’s computer became a critical link in tracking Merah down. The brother Abdelkader had already been linked to Iraqi Islamist networks.

Prosecutor Francois Molins said Merah burst out of his bathroom when police gingerly entered his apartment Thursday morning, wildly firing his gun about 30 times before jumping out an apartment window.

“(He)launches an assault, charging police through the apartment and firing at them with a Colt .45, continuing to advance, armed and firing, as he jumps from the balcony,” Molins said.

Merah fired “until he was hit by a retaliatory shot from the RAID (elite police unit), which felled him with a bullet to the head,” Molins said.

The prosecutor said police fired in self-defense after going in cautiously through the front door, using robot cameras to see if there were any boobytraps. Three members of the special squad were wounded Thursday, bringing the total of injured French officers throughout the standoff to five.

Merah, lying on the ground below his second-story apartment, was wearing a flak jacket and black djellabah robe. A Colt 45 ? the type of weapon used in the three attacks ? was at his side along with a sack, Molins said.

Authorities said Merah espoused a radical form of Islam and had been to Afghanistan and the Pakistani militant stronghold of Waziristan, where he claimed to have received training from al-Qaida. He also had a long record of petty crimes in France for which he served time in prison.

Elite police squads had set off sporadic blasts throughout the night and into the morning ? some blew off the apartment’s shutters ? to pressure Merah to give up. A new set of detonations, known as flash bangs, resounded at 10:30 a.m. (0930 GMT), portending an end to the standoff. Volleys of gunfire were heard an hour later.

Interior Minister Claude Gueant said police “went in by the door, taking off the door first. They also came in by the windows.”

He said police used special video equipment to search the second-floor apartment but could not find him until the instruments surveyed the bathroom.

“The killer came out” firing “with extreme violence,” Gueant told reporters. Police “tried to protect themselves and fired back.”

Merah had made “extremely explicit films” of all three deadly attacks, video since viewed by police, and claimed to have posted them online, the prosecutor said.

In the film of the March 11 attack that killed a paratrooper, the prosecutor said the gunman is heard saying: “You kill my brothers ? I kill you.”

In his film of the second attack, on March 15 that killed two paratroopers and wounded a third in nearby Montauban, Merah cried out “Allahu Akbar!” or “God is great” in Arabic, the prosecutor said.

Authorities spoke little about the video of Merah slaying a rabbi and three children at a Jewish school in Toulouse. A witness to other video of that rampage, from the school, had described him shooting young children in the head.

Merah told negotiators he killed to avenge the deaths of Palestinian children and to protest the French army’s involvement in Afghanistan. He was also upset over a French government ban last year on face-covering Islamic veils.

Molins said Merah told investigators where to find the bag with the videos of the slayings, caught by a camera that had been strapped to his chest and given to someone else to keep.

After the standoff ended, Sarkozy announced tough new measures to combat terrorism. He said anyone who regularly visits “websites which support terrorism or call for hate or violence will be punished by the law.” He also promised a crackdown on anyone who goes abroad “for the purposes of indoctrination in terrorist ideology.”

The French president also appealed to citizens not to confuse violence with France’s estimated 5 million Muslims.

“Our Muslim compatriots had nothing to do with the crazy motive of a terrorist,” Sarkozy said, noting that Muslim paratroopers were among those killed by the radical.

In Toulouse, the state prosecutor said off-and-on negotiations Wednesday with the suspect ? all recorded by authorities ? broke down again at night. Merah, after initially saying he would surrender, later said he would resist, and that it would be either them or him.

“If it’s me, who cares? I’ll go to paradise,” the prosecutor quoted Merah as saying.

Merah was tracked down by more than 200 special investigators after the Monday attack on a Jewish school in northern Toulouse.

The prosecutor said two major breaks in the case led them to Merah: his mother’s computer, which was used by Merah to respond to an online ad by a paratrooper trying to sell his scooter. The soldier became Merah’s first victim. Authorities also found a Yamaha motorcycle shop where Merah suspiciously sought information about how to deactivate a GPS tracker.

Molins said Merah had plans to kill another soldier, which prompted the first police raid at around 3 a.m. Wednesday. After that erupted into a firefight, wounding two police, the standoff dragged on and on, with sporadic negotiations.

Europeans launch heavy load to space station

A huge robot European cargo ship launched to the International Space Station on Friday, lighting up the night sky over the northeast coast of South America as it began a five-day journey to deliver key supplies to the orbiting outpost.

The European Space Agency’s third Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV-3) lifted off at 12:34 a.m. ET atop an Ariane 5 rocket from Europe’s spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. After a brief light show, the rocket slipped through a cloud layer and soared into orbit.

The 13-ton cargo freighter is loaded with about 7.2 tons of supplies, including food, water, clothing, experiments and fuel for the space station, according to NASA. The unmanned ATV-3 is the heaviest cargo shipment ever delivered to the station by a robotic spacecraft, ESA officials said in a statement.

The vehicle is scheduled to arrive at the space station on March 28 at 6:32 p.m. ET.

“This is just the start of a very long journey which will take the Edoardo Amaldi into space for about five months,” ESA Director-General Jean-Jacques Dordain said after the successful launch. “It’s a good start; a very good start.” [Dazzling Night Launch Photos of Europe's ATV-3]

The ATV-3 is nicknamed “Edoardo Amaldi,” after the famed Italian physicist and spaceflight pioneer who is credited with helping to create the European Space Agency. Amaldi is also one of the founding fathers of CERN, the particle physics laboratory along the Swiss-French border that houses the Large Hadron Collider.

The cylindrical spacecraft is 35 feet (10.7 meters) long and 14.7 feet (4.5 meters) wide ? large enough to fit a double-decker bus inside. Europe’s disposable ATVs are designed to automatically dock to the Zvezda module on the Russian portion of the International Space Station.

The cargo ships then remain attached to the complex for up to six months before they are packed with garbage and deliberately sent to burn up during atmospheric re-entry.

The European ATVs are part of an international fleet of disposable robot cargo ships that are used to transport hardware and critical supplies to the space station. Russia’s unmanned Progress ships and Japan’s H-2 Transfer Vehicles (HTVs) also regularly ferry cargo to the orbiting outpost.

ESA routinely names the ATV vehicles after historical figures who were influential to astronomy or space exploration. The agency’s first ATV, named Jules Verne, made its maiden voyage to the space station in 2008. The ATV-2, dubbed Johannes Kepler, launched in 2011.

The next two planned ATVs, named ATV-4 Albert Einstein and ATV-5 Georges Lemaitre, are scheduled to launch to the International Space Station in 2013 and 2014, respectively.

The ATV spacecraft are not the only vehicles launched into orbit by Arianespace out of the European spaceport in French Guiana. Earlier this year, ESA’s first Vega rocket, which is smaller than the Ariane 5 and is built to loft small satellites, blasted off from the space center. Last year, Arianespace also began launching Russian-built Soyuz rockets on unmanned missions from the South American site.

“We are now a significant space power,” Dordain said. “I can say that.”

Banks lend again, but their customers are wary

(AP) ? Since the credit crisis of 2008, everyone has been waiting for the banks to start lending money again. It’s finally happening, but there’s a catch: Businesses are afraid to spend it.

Bank loans to businesses grew 10 percent last year after dropping 19 percent in 2009 and 9 percent in 2010, according to the Federal Reserve. JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo confirmed the growth in their latest financial results.

But much of the loan growth comes from lines of credit, not traditional loans. And instead of tapping available credit to power up plants, open factories and hire people, businesses are waiting.

At the same time, they are hoarding cash. JPMorgan, the nation’s largest bank, is holding a record $200 billion in business deposits, up 26 percent last year alone. Wells Fargo and Bank of America also say deposits from middle-market businesses have soared.

“Our business customers are feeling optimistic,” says Perry Pelos, head of commercial banking for Wells Fargo. “But I’m not seeing any boom yet because they are still a little uneasy about the future.”

Even successful business owners have found it difficult to adopt the easy confidence of the years before the deep and bruising recession. They want to see more improvement in the economy before they take great risks again.

Jon Schlegel, owner of a Colorado brunch restaurant called Snooze Eatery, says his customers are buying more Bloody Marys and mimosas to go with the popular and more expensive chilaquiles Benedict ? his take on eggs Benedict, stacked with steak and tortillas and topped with fresh salsa and cotija cheese.

He’s noticed more out-of-town visitors in his restaurants on recent weekends than in the past couple of years. Yet Schlegel is careful about every expense. He pays for supplies and meets payroll with the restaurants’ own cash flow rather than borrowing.

“I’ve got to watch my costs. Meat prices are rising, and coffee prices are going up. If I raise my prices, will people keep coming and can I keep growing?” Schlegel says.

Schlegel’s hesitance is common among small and independent businesses that struggled mightily during the Great Recession. For many business owners, it has been an arduous climb back just to survive, and that’s made many of them averse to risk.

Analysts are watching bank loan growth closely because it provides clues about whether companies are preparing to hire. Unemployment remains high at 8.3 percent, though it has fallen from its recession peak of 10 percent.

Bank loans play a vital role in powering what economists call a virtuous cycle. Banks lend to companies, which spend to open factories to create widgets. Plants mean jobs, which leads to more money in people’s pockets to spend. It re-energizes the economy.

Small and midsize businesses depend on bank loans to grow far more than large corporations, which can pay for their plans by selling bonds or stock in the financial markets.

In February, H.J. Heinz Co., the giant food company best known for its ketchup, raised $300 million by selling five-year bonds at an interest rate of just 1.5 percent. IBM, Procter & Gamble and McDonald’s have all raised hundreds of millions of dollars recently by selling bonds and paying record-low interest rates.

Small and midsize businesses blamed banks for making matters worse when the recession struck by pulling back credit dramatically, and for not helping during the economic recovery by making credit freely available.

For their part, banks say regulations passed since the financial crisis have made it difficult for them to lend because they have to set more cash aside to cushion themselves against future losses.

On a bank’s books, a line of credit that a business can tap as needed counts the same as a traditional, lump-sum loan. While they don’t break out the numbers, banks say businesses are opening lines of credit but skittish about drawing on them.

In conference calls with analysts and reporters, bank executives have said recently that what they call the loan utilization rate, the percentage of available credit that businesses use, is unusually low. They do not release that number.

For instance, JPMorgan Chase said its loans to middle-market businesses grew 17 percent in the last three months of 2011, the sixth consecutive quarter of loan growth. But CEO Jamie Dimon warned analysts in January clients were still waiting to use the money.

“It’s not utilization. It’s new lines of credit for the most part,” he said.

The amount of loans to middle-market businesses at Wells Fargo grew 15 percent in the last three months of 2011 from the same period a year earlier, to about $265 billion. But Wells executives, too, report that not enough of the money is being used.

Most of Chase’s customers are like Schlegel: They seem to have enough money to run their businesses. That they are opening lines of credit in large numbers is a sign that they want to be prepared if there is a pickup in in demand.

For Schlegel, demand is just starting to creep back. After the success of his four brunch restaurants, he took out two loans late last year from JPMorgan Chase to open his fifth and sixth restaurants ? one in Colorado another in San Diego, his first out of state.

The two new restaurants allowed him to hire about 80 employees. But Schlegel is as skittish as the day he opened his first restaurant in 2006.

Scouting for new restaurant locations in 2011 proved more difficult than in 2010 and in 2009 because there were fewer spaces available and they were more expensive.

“I guess that’s a favorable sign of an improving economy,” says Schlegel. “I’m worried about how much we will be able to expand, and how easily I will be able to get my next loan.”

After several of the state?s largest unions withdrew donations to a Hispanic legislative conference in Albany this weekend, Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Michael Bloomberg are making up the difference.

Both the state and city teachers? unions pulled funding for the conference, known as SOMOS, after the legislature approved a new pension tier for new city and state employees.

In a joint statement Thursday, the mayor and the governor criticized the move, saying, ?We think the unions’ actions are unfortunate, and don’t want the conference to suffer as a result.?

United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew had harsh words for both executives.

“The mayor and the governor can?t get around one fact: a middle of the night, sleazy backroom deal with gerrymandered districts and giving a rough time to all the future workers of the state, they can?t get around the fact that that?s what they did last week,? said Mulgrew.

The mayor and the governor will donate $36,000 each to the organization.

Bloomberg will donate from his personal fortune, and the governor will donate from his campaign account.
